Welcome to beautiful Wainui Beach!
Our holiday house is overlooking the white sand and clear blue water at Wainui Beach, just 6km from Gisborne city. Just five minutes in the car, 20 minutes by bicycle.
Wainui is world famous as a surfing beach. Photographs of surfing at Wainui, often the waves right in front of our place at the surf location know as ” Stock Route”, appear in surfing magazines around the world.
It’s also a stunning swimming and sunbathing beach. No large rivers flow into the bay and the water is almost always crystal clear. It’s a superb beach for walking. There’s a 3km crescent of pure sand with rocky headlands at both ends. Fish can be caught off the beach and crayfish can be caught beneath the water over the reefs, we have a pot and a sea kayak for you to use.
At the south end of the beach is Tuahine Point with its derelict lighthouse, an adventurous walk around the rocks. To the north is the Wainui-Makorori headland which has a walkway up to stunning views over both Wainui and neighbouring Makorori Beach.
Also at the northern end of the beach is the Sperm Whale Grave, an historic site where, in 1970, 59 whales beached themselves and were later buried in a huge grave bulldozed in the nearby sand dunes. At the centre of the beach, know as “The Pines”, is the local Wainui surf club which patrols the swimming area during summer.
